From Major Non-Conformity to ISO Certification: Our Journey to ISO 9001 & ISO 14001

At HD Professional Cleaning Services, we're proud to announce that we have officially achieved ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certification.

While receiving the certificates is a huge achievement, the journey to get there is something we're equally proud of. We wanted to share our experience because it proves that continuous improvement isn't just something we talk about with our clients – it's something we genuinely live by.

Stage 1 – Not the Result We Had Hoped For

Like many businesses embarking on the ISO journey, our Stage 1 audit wasn't perfect.

We received a Major Non-Conformity, along with several Opportunities for Improvement (OFIs).

For a moment, it was disappointing. We'd invested countless hours developing policies, procedures and systems, and naturally hoped we were much closer to the finish line.

However, after taking a step back, we realised that this was exactly what the audit process is designed to do – identify areas where businesses can become stronger.

Rather than viewing the findings as failures, we treated them as a roadmap for improvement.

Turning Feedback into Action

Following our Stage 1 audit, we carried out a thorough review of our management systems.

The Major Non-Conformity centred around our internal audit programme, so we developed and implemented a comprehensive schedule of internal audits across both our Quality and Environmental Management Systems, ensuring every area of the business was reviewed and documented.

We also addressed our Opportunities for Improvement, including:

  • Expanding our risk and opportunity registers to provide greater detail, ownership and monitoring.

  • Strengthening our environmental emergency preparedness by broadening our planning and documenting additional emergency scenarios.

  • Reviewing and refining documentation to ensure consistency throughout our management system.

  • Embedding new monitoring processes and evidence to demonstrate continual improvement.

Every recommendation was treated as an opportunity to make the business better, not simply something to tick off for the next audit.

Stage 2 – A Fantastic Outcome

When Stage 2 arrived, we felt far more confident.

The work we'd put in paid off, and we're delighted to say that we successfully achieved certification for both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

The audit was completed with only a small number of Opportunities for Improvement, and no non-conformities.

That's exactly what an ISO management system is about.

The standards aren't intended to create a business that's "perfect"; they're designed to encourage organisations to continually improve. Receiving a few OFIs is completely normal and provides valuable guidance on how we can keep developing.

What This Means for Our Clients

Achieving ISO certification isn't just about having two new logos on our website.

It demonstrates that we have independently verified systems in place to:

  • Deliver consistently high-quality cleaning services.

  • Monitor and continually improve customer satisfaction.

  • Manage risks effectively.

  • Protect the environment by reducing waste, preventing pollution and improving environmental performance.

  • Ensure our processes are documented, monitored and regularly reviewed.

  • Commit to continual improvement across every area of the business.

For our clients, it provides additional confidence that they're working with a company that takes quality, compliance and environmental responsibility seriously.

A Team Achievement

This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the commitment of our entire team.

Implementing ISO standards required everyone to embrace new ways of working, from documenting processes and completing audits to improving communication and environmental awareness.

Every member of the team played a part, and we're incredibly grateful for their hard work throughout the process.

Looking Ahead

Achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 isn't the end of the journey—it's the beginning of the next chapter.

We'll continue carrying out regular internal audits, reviewing our objectives, listening to client feedback and looking for ways to improve every aspect of our service.

Our commitment to continuous improvement doesn't stop here. We've already signed up to begin the implementation of ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management) and SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) accreditation. These are the next steps in strengthening our management systems and demonstrating our commitment to providing a safe working environment for our employees, clients and contractors.

Alongside this, we'll continue investing in staff training, health and safety, environmental responsibility and recognised industry accreditations, ensuring we remain at the forefront of professional cleaning services.

To everyone who has supported us along the way—our staff, clients and partners—thank you.

Here's to continually raising the standard.
